Finally you reach a sign declaring “Cattail Falls trail .5 miles”. A half mile doesn’t sound too bad, so you only bring one bottle of water. After a fair bit of walking you encounter a second sign, “Cattail Falls 1.5 miles”. At this time you realize that the .5 miles was just the distance to the trail head and that the entire hike is about 4 miles round trip. You’re pretty tired, but clearly a magical waterfall awaits you (there’s even a picture of it on the sign) and neither of you has the foresight to guess the effect a 6-month drought might have on waterfalls in general.
