1.5 miles later you reach the end of the trail and find a shallow pond of not-yet-fully-evaporated water at the base of what would normally be a waterfall (the spectacle is not pictured here). In the distance you hear a strange sound - possibly the wind but most likely a mountain lion - and you ask if you can walk back to the car now. Despite the tragicomedy described here, it’s a beautiful trail (and utterly devoid of other hikers when we were there). The land looked powder blue on the walk to the nonexistent falls, but I couldn’t quite capture the effect in these photographs, all taken on the return trip. I’d still recommend the hike. Just bring an extra bottle of water.
