Somewhere around here we realized we should probably head back (Thomas is actually in the foreground of this photo, believe it or not). Luckily we remembered to bring flashlights, as it become completely dark over the next half hour. The beams of our flashlights occasionally revealed more bats, and the skies were crawling with stars. It was a bit spooky at times. But eventually we saw the faint glow of the campsite and made our way back to our tent, where dinner awaited in the cooler – housed safely in one of Big Bend’s ubiquitous bear-proof storage boxes.
